Car Blogs -Toyota’s Celica rebirth may still be on track

April 26th, 2009 Comments Off Posted in Car News

We’ve known Toyota has been working on a partnership with Subaru to bring back the Celica. But there has also been confirmation that plans were being delayed until at least 2012, if not indefinitely. Now there’s a story coming out in next month’s L’Automobile Magazine that says the Celica will be here in 2010. The French publication says that this has been confirmed by Thierry Dombreval, vice president of sales and marketing of Toyota France. We still are a little cautious about news of the traditionally frugal Toyota continuing plans for a sports sedan in unsure economic times (especially in addition to the rumored new hybrid MR2). But if Toyota is willing to take the risk on a new rear-drive car, we will be one its largest supporters.Last I checked, the Celica was FWD or AWD, not RWD. I like the idea of the Celica rebirth. That way, Toyota has a FWD, AWD and MR sportscar, all at affordable prices. All they have to do know is give us the Supra.

April 14th, 2009 Comments Off Posted in Car News

Do you happen to be in the neighborhood for a fully built 1200 HP AWD Time Attack racecar? If so eBay has you covered. It appears that the online auctioneer is becoming a more common place to find these types of ultra high performance super cars. The most notable feature of this 1999 Nissan Skyline GT-R is its color. The yellow exterior of this ten year old racecar looks better than ever. The color is one of the signature touches that the Japanese tuners JUN applies to their Super Lemon vehicles, like the 1000 HP R-33 with a top speed of over 230 MPH. The modifications to this GT-R go far beyond paintwork. The vehicle features a Greddy T-78 turbocharger, a large unit capable of producing tremendous horsepower. The R-34 has 8 piston front brake calipers from Brembo, racecar hardware. The doors, trunk and hood are all made from lightweight composite material. With the current economic situation and the limited application of the Hyper Powered Skyline it will be interesting to see how much a JUN built Time Attack

Review: 2009 Buick Enclave CXL AWD

February 17th, 2009 Comments Off Posted in Car News

Full-size SUVs have proven to be some of the most profitable vehicles in the auto industry’s 100+ years of existence, but thanks to the proverbial perfect storm of high gas prices and rising environmental concerns, new car buyers are flocking to smaller, more fuel efficient models. This may be bad news for General Motors’ larger ‘utes – the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon – but the trend away from traditional SUVs has opened the door for more car-based crossover utility vehicles, including GM’s own Buick Enclave.

Chrysler will drop AWD on Some ’09 Models

October 30th, 2008 No Comments   Posted in Car News

Chrysler will be dropping all-wheel drive options on the Chrysler Sebring, Dodge Avenger and Dodge Caliber for 2009. This in not surprising because take rates (those who looked and the cars and then purchased them) for the cars were 1.5, 0.7 and 4.4 percent respectively. “The bottom line is people want fuel economy, and the AWD modules are not profitable for us,” said Chrysler spokesman Jiyan Cadiz. “That’s something we can get rid of as we’re consolidating products and finding what’s profitable.”

Part of the problem is that AWD systems add cost and weight to a car while reducing fuel economy by two to ten percent. But this also doesn’t mean AWD technology is likely to disappear completely anytime soon. Although Chrysler buyers haven’t seemed to fully embrace the technology, it is a popular option in the in other U.S. brands (Subaru only makes AWD cars) as well as other parts of the world.
