Written by Jo Alexander
The first Lotus Esprit burst into life in 1976, and with its stunning wedge shaped looks it really stood out from the humdrum Rovers and Fords that were on the road at the time. Colin Chapman was so proud of his new sports car that he arranged to have it parked outside Pinewood studios in the hope that it would be used in the latest James Bond film. The plan worked, and Roger Moore drove a white Lotus Esprit, that could convert into a submarine, in the Spy Who Loved Med.

Written by Dave Foord
Why is it that most electric cars look like they’ve been designed by five year olds? The Gee Wiz, the Nice MyCar, the Sakura Maranello 4, all cars that would, without the benefit of CGI, fit quite comfortably into the next Pixar Cars Movie. Why? When electric car designers roll up their sleeves and sit in front of a drawing board, do they suddenly regress to an age where trees look like lollipops and sheep bear a striking resemblance to the clouds above them. Funky, innovative, ground breaking designs that are hardly ever practical. That was until the launch of the Tesla Model S.

The concept of electricity as a fuel for vehicles has been one of the most interesting ideas since a long time. It gained high significance following the fluctuating petrol and diesel prices and increasing awareness about environment among the people. The environmentalists have been vehemently supporting electricity as an alternative fuel. Thus, electric vehicles in general and electric cars in particular are popular throughout the world. Consequently, many electric vehicles have been manufactured and are being widely used across the world.

When the visionary designer Colin Chapmen first set out to design the Lotus 7 he had lightness, speed and agility at the forefront of his mind. What he could not of know was that he was about to create a timeless design classic, which still has the ability to embarrass supercars costing over ten times as much.

What, you’ve never heard of the Clan Motor Company? C’mon a bunch of Lotus’ best engineers got together and created a lightweight, quick and cheap(ish) sports car that was a favorite of the British racing community. That doesn’t ring any bells? Well, if it wasn’t for some tough economic conditions and striking workforce, Clan would possibly be known as a racing powerhouse today.Clan started its kit car production on the Crusader back in the early 70s and had on-again/off-again production going on until about 1987. Not even good genes could save it from falling victim to the same troubles of the many small British sports car manufacturers of the time. In total, only about 500 examples of the Crusader were ever made. But now Autocar is reporting that Clan is comming back, at least in name (ironically Autocar was the first one to break the news on the Crusader almost 30 years ago.) A company out of Sheffield in England is planning a Clan Cruiser. Just to make sure the story comes full-circle, the Cruiser is plannRelated Keywords for this posts:Car body kits, fiero, inexpensive, bmw, mustang, cheap, 300zx, honda, 240sx, lift golf cart, 350z Read more from the source
Car Blogs -Ecotricity to produce EV sports car by the end of 2009
Lightweight Lotus designs seem to be a favorite to turn into electric vehicles. The Elise was the basis for the Tesla Roadster. Chrysler just basically strapped a bunch of batteries to the Europa to make the Dodge EV, and now Ecotricity has been modifying an Exige to make its own plug-in sports car.Ecotricity is actually a company that sells electricity captured by wind, so the concept car could almost be considered wind-powered. The British company has only spent about £200,000 ($290,000) so far, but it says the car should be able to make the 0 to 60 mph sprint in four seconds and hit a top speed of 140 mph. This is more then just a pipe dream. The engineers have even put in some interesting features like a finger print recognition ignition (start the car with a finger print). If all goes right, this electric car could be in production by the end of this year. The largest hurdle that seems to be left to cross is giving the little guy a name.Check out some of the videos after the jump to watch the progress of Related Keywords for this posts:Car body kits, fiero, inexpensive, bmw, mustang, cheap, 300zx, honda, 240sx, lift golf cart, 350z Read more from the source
Car Blogs -Porsche Driving Experience
It looks like England is the destination for track schools. Last week Lotus opened its new driving academy in Hethel, and now Porsche has opened its new Driving Experience Center at the Silverstone raceway in Northamptonshire. Watch and dream as the could be you on your next trip to England.P.S. If you can’t make it across the pond, there’s also a Porsche Driving School at Barber Motorsport Park near Birmingham, Alabama…but that track isn’t as famous as Silverstone .Related Keywords for this posts:Car body kits, fiero, inexpensive, bmw, mustang, cheap, 300zx, honda, 240sx, lift golf cart, 350z Read more from the source
Car Blogs -Jaguar and Lotus to cooperate for new XE roadster
Lotus doesn’t just make its own cars, its also an engineering firm. Lotus’ hands have given the Delorean its only redeeming quality (the handling), and even turned a Lada Riva into a track-ready racer for the guys at Top Gear. So it’s no surprise that Lotus would give its fellow countrymen at Jaguar the occasional turn of the wrench. It’s now being reported that Jaguar is using Lotus’ resources in the development of the XE roadster. They’re sending data to Lotus Engineering on Jaguar’s behalf, said a well-placed source.Jaguar is looking to use an aluminum chassis on the future XE. While Jaguar is familiar with using the lightweight alloy on the XJ, Lotus has become an expert at it (including giving Aston Martin a hand with the Vanquish). This would also not be the first time the two companies have teamed up. Lotus was onboard last summer to help create the super sharp, U.K.-only Jaguar XKR-S.Related Keywords for this posts:Car body kits, fiero, inexpensive, bmw, mustang, cheap, 300zx, honda, 240sx, lift golf cart, 350z Read more from the source
Car Blogs -Proton getting muddy to clean up its image?
Proton’s cars usually don’t get much time on TopSpeed because they have traditionally been, well, boring. But the economy carmaker has always had an ace up its sleeve: it owns Lotus. Now it may be using the British brand to help it dominate the rally car circuit. It seems there is a perfect storm brewing. Subaru is dropping out of the World Rally Championship, which is leaving a big hole for a new competitor to fill. Proton has already got a racer called the Satria Neo S2000 (based on the Lotus-tuned R3 Satria). What can really bring this all together is the driver, and ex-Subie champion Petter Solberg is rumored to fill that role for Proton. If Proton were to go through with plans to compete in the WRC, it could possibly finally get the brand some worldwide respect. After all, rallying took Subaru from its cheap and ugly days and gave it bedroom poster status.Related Keywords for this posts:Car body kits, fiero, inexpensive, bmw, mustang, cheap, 300zx, honda, 240sx, lift golf cart, 350z Read more from the source
